Travel Spotlight: Devi the Daredevil

How I met Devi the Daredevil.

I met Devi through one of the Tourism Selangor program and found out later that we share the same birthday (yay for Cancerians!). Besides that, we also share the same passion in traveling, although I prefer something safe while she is more adventurous. She’s also a Chindian which makes her world more interesting as she embraces both the Chinese & Indian culture perfectly.

For this months’ Travel Spotlight, I asked her about how her journey has been since she won the contest which will take her to the next BIG adventure of her lifetime.

We read about your recent win on the #AllianzDare2bHealthy Challenge. Tell us how you won the contest and what the prize is all about.

Well, Thank you!. I needed to upload a short video doing the 3 exercise routines on Instagram based on their #AllianzDare2bHealthy Challenge requirement and state my resolution for 2016. I almost forgot about the contest but I managed to upload before the closing date and the next thing I knew, I was shortlisted as TOP 6.

Only 3 winning resolutions were selected for pledges that were daring, out of their comfort zone and see them adopt a healthier lifestyle. After deliberation, they finally announced that I was one of the 3 winners. I was so excited and anxious at the same time. This is big! The prize would be a 6 months mentoring course with the ultimate prize of fulfilling my 2016 resolution.

Since my 2016 resolution is to complete the Annapurna Trek at Nepal, my prize is an all-expense paid trip to Nepal to complete it with a guide, a porter, with meals and accommodation! It’s an awesome prize & I am truly grateful for this opportunity. A big thank you to Allianz and my personal trainer, Subhash.

You must love hiking a lot. Where’s your favorite spot to hike in Malaysia?

Yes I do! Currently it will be at Tabur Hill, Melawati (Malaysia). It’s a short hike (depending on which peak) ranging from 30 minute to 2 hours. There are 5 peaks altogether – the West, East, Far East, Extra & Extreme,  but there’s just something about this World’s longest quartz ridge that fascinates me. The view, the surrounding, the aura and probably the challenge as well as the adventure that keeps me coming back here.

Do you need a lot of preparation for these hikes?

I believe there’s no such thing as a short-cut in any victory or success. The same goes for hiking; you need to be physically fit, spiritually strong and most importantly, mentally focused. Sounds like a serious business, eh? But really, safety is also another key of importance. And last but not least, you need a positive mind. Nothing beats that in whatever things we do.

If you could recommend us the travel gears for hiking purposes, what would they be?

Proper hiking shoes is a must! A backpack with good support, nice jogging pants and of course a shade to add that ‘coolness factor’ (because I want to look good in my photos, haha.) Aside to all these, try to travel light and wear comfortable/breathable/dri-fit clothing while hiking. Do not bring unnecessary stuff because it will only wear you down.

What do you love about traveling?

What is there not to love about traveling? My motto in life is “Dare to dream and live life interestingly!” I am just an ordinary person but I feel that my dreams are what makes it extraordinary. I adore traveling and as much as enthusiastically discovering nature, culture, people, tradition, art or the beauty of life through photography and experiences.

“Traveling keeps me happy, humble and the fact that I could share it with others, it keeps me alive.”

What’s on your bucket list for 2017.

To visit Zhangjiajie, Hunan (the place that inspired the Avatar movie) and to chase more volcanic mountains in Indonesia!

Have you been to any place or country that you didn’t like?

I cant really say I didn’t like a place, but the least preferred so far was Perth, Australia. It was probably because I went at the wrong timing, which was right after the snow storm and during Easter break in 2012. Almost every shop were closed at the time, the car rental services were not available and it seemed like everything was a little expensive than I expected.

Would you rather bungee jump from Victoria Falls or fly an Aerobatics plane?

Neither. I tried bungee jumping and being in an aerobatics plane, and because my imbalance level was quite bad, it caused me bad dizziness for days thereafter. It’s a nice-to-see experience, but not really nice-to-try even though I love to do adventurous stuff.

If you could move (relocate) to any part of the world, where would you go to and why?

Canada! They have beautiful landscapes with great wildlife and probably I would finally find my macho blue-eyed man there *giggles*, just kidding, but then again, who knows right?

Last but not least, could you share with us your tips on staying fit & healthy while traveling?

I try to incorporate healthy activities in all my travels, like hiking and trekking or even water sports. However if I’m traveling for a city visit, I will try to hit the gym and run on a treadmill for at least 45-50 minutes. Beside that, I will try to eat more fruits and drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration.
