Style Chameleon: 20 Vintage Suitcases For The Home

I have a liking for suitcases and vintage ones too but never got around to purchase one yet possibly because of its price which tends to be expensive after up-cycling work is done. But I do recall using a white squarish one when I was in primary school. I had borrowed it from my mum to go to Cameron Highlands with my cousins and during a school get-away trip. If we had kept it until today it would be vintage and it would have been perfect for the new place. While living here, I have been doing some research on these babies and what we can do with them. The search results were fascinating to say the least, especially when people are creative in finding ways for them to be useful in our daily lives. Here are 20 different ways we can use a vintage suitcase in our home, a few of which I can’t wait to explore.

1. Use it as a nightstand.

Stack the luggage together with a box to create a chic side table by the bed. Place an antique lamp with your favourite items and you’ll have yourself a cosy bedroom.

2. Shelve it

This is such a genius functional idea that can be placed in the living room hall or the dining area. All we need are different types of luggage, mount them up on the wall and place family portraits or other unique items on it.

3. Turn it into a bar suitcase

I saw another version which is portable and you can bring the entire bar with you. This one is more of providing space for your bar on a rustic table. Throw in the mixer, the shot glasses and you can have yourself a small party at the comfort of your home.

4. Use it as a side table for your sofa.

Instead of a table, replace it with stacks of luggage by the sofa. It can also be a storage space for blankets, small cushions and a place to put the TV remote or a night lamp.

5. Turn it into a nice table stand.

This luggage has such a nice pair of legs. Oh make them 4 legs which was installed to make them stand from the ground. I love how they’ve used wooden legs that matches the vintage luggage and gives it more character.

6. Turn it into a chest of drawers.

Don’t have enough drawers? Grab a few of these luggage and up-cycle them to a colourful chest of drawers. You could even have them custom made and remove the top of the luggage so that when you pull it out you could place your items in them straight away.

7. Make it into a bed for your pet.

Such a cute thing to make for your adorable pet. Have the top removed and place a comfortable cushion for the darlings to sleep on when they’re tired playing around the house.

This I love so much that it could be the first thing I want to have custom made for the washroom in the master bedroom. You could put a mirror, shelves and light bulbs for an awesome vanity cabinet look and feel.

9. Bring your art tools with you

A convenient way to carry all the art tools and supplies to the park, the lake or even at the comfort of your own home. You could even make the compartments for the tools so that it’s organized when you paint your masterpiece.

10. Make it into a portable speaker to blast your feel good music.

Now this was new to me. Convert a vintage luggage to be a portable speaker and bring it with you for road trips, picnics or camping even. Add some feel good music and you’ll have yourself a mini concert wherever you go.

11. Use it to to store your books.

Instead of book-ends, use the luggage to store books by the bed and keep it organized. The luggage could also be closed to avoid dust. Placing the books here would prioritize your reading as you could keep them and place a new batch once you’re done.

12. Turn it into cute chairs.

My parents saw these in one of the restaurants at the new KLIA2 Airport and I thought it was really clever of them to put these to good use. Although those were meant for customers, this luxury version would look classy in any home.

If the bride and groom are the traveling kind then this vintage luggage is appropriate as a wedding cake stand. I love how the flowers are placed and how vintage the whole setting looks.

14. Use it to store cards during the wedding reception.

Another use for the wedding reception would be as a place for cards with good wishes to the bride and groom. For us it could also be used for door gifts to the invited guests.

15. Have a vintage study table

With a study table like this, I would study every single day. With the right legs and table surface, it can fit into the corner of the room nicely. This version even has a yellow light built into it so that you can work under dim lights or the dark (if you prefer).

16. As end-of-bed storage

I’ve always wanted a storage place at the end of the bed and this seems like a good idea if I can find a large luggage that is. Include the appropriate legs (height), a charming lock and I could use to put pillows, blankets or even books.

17. As part of the hallway decoration

Mixing modern decorations with vintage suitcase seems to match well with the right supplementary pieces. It also makes the room appear spacious despite the few items that are in there.

18. To store vintage CDs

I currently keep my CD’s from the gruge era in small boxes and this would be a good replacement for them as it opens and closes easily. There’s also room for cassettes or vinyl for the avid collector.

19. Rock it as a guitar

I didn’t know the vintage luggage could rock it as a guitar until I saw this. Playing this at a live gig event would attract some attention definitely.

20. Final but not least, take it out with you on your travel adventures.

As I mentioned earlier in this post the best use of the vintage suitcases would be to take it around the world and give it good memories.
