Malaysia: Warung Seni Galvanize Lab, Malacca
Sleeping with the Arts
Oh boy this place was so hard to find even in the popular part of town of Jonker Street, Melaka. We saw Hard Rock Cafe opposite the A Famosa fort but passed the art studio three times before we managed to really locate them. It was hard to spot it as Warung Seni, Galvanize Lab looked like a cafe from outside but as you enter through the glass door there lies an art gallery with numerous artworks and installations which makes you confused even further as you’re uncertain if this is where we’re going to sleep for the night. There’s even a traditional wooden window panel with polaroids of visitors to the Lab and merchandise items for sale.
Fortunately for us it is the right place and our room happens to be a room which is normally leased out to the resident artists should they be staying there for their art projects in Warung Seni. The room, with a king size bed, a traditional wooden ‘gerobok’ and a cute blue-red lazy chair feels just like home. One could paint in the common area and retreat to the room for solace before continuing to paint.
Contemporary Art + Street Art Gallery + Halal Food Cafe + Cool Studio Stay + Events-Meeting Point; in the Lab @Jonker. Its all about a new heritage lifestyle in great heritage micro-gallery building in the heart of UNESCO site of Melaka. – Warung Seni Galvanize Lab.
Upstairs there is a dorm fit with double bunk beds for group travellers and a shared bathroom downstairs. A lounge area with paintings line the walls and you can imagine parking yourself here to do some writing or to just hang out with your friends to chit chat. I like how they put up a friendly reminder notice in the room which said “Non-registered person may only stay until 22:00 and prohibited to sleep in the bed to respect other fellow guests rights and comfort.” You know that they covered all bases to ensure that the customers get a good night rest in the busy streets of Jonker.
Everything about Warung Seni Galvanize Lab
We met En Azimin Tazilan, an artist & co-owner of the Lab who explained to us the background of this niche place and the art projects which are currently displayed in the lobby. Even the famous Malaysian artist, U-Wei had recently stayed here to launch his artwork. En Azimin is not the only staff in the Lab. We saw different people coming in and out of the Lab having discussions and meeting friends at night, who were not shy to say hello to us.
According to their information, the Galvanize Lab Studio Stay building was originally used as a Merchants office by a famous nobleman in Malacca back in 18th century. Its was also an official residence of the nobleman family after the Japanese occupation and after the independence day. The Lab gives a historical background environment with a cool ambiance, inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of culture, heritage, urban-street life of the city where the age-old traditions meet cutting-edge technology .
They also offer an all-new hospitality experience in their studio stay with great ambiance & experience within art gallery. It is the ideal address for travelers who like to combine the excitement of a heritage city with absolute tranquility. Whether you are FLASHPACKERS or BACKPACKERS its suits both the best.
The lab is also a walking distance to the heritage sites, the river cruise, the Jonker night market and the whole entire Jonker street. We parked our car somewhere near the waterfront area and walked to The Lab and the covered the streets while we were there. It’s much easier to go around on foot than go through the traffic jam on weekends. Overall, I’d recommend this place if you love arts and don’t mind to sleep in an art gallery environment surrounded with friendly people.
