Malaysian International Tourism Bloggers Conference & Awards 2012 Gala Awards Night

When my friend Jard told me about the Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Conference & Awards, I said to myself “Oh no, another award where you have to get people to vote for you to win something”. I am grateful for friends like Bella who nominated me for Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Blog, Tourism Travel Blog & Tourism Destination Blog. I am glad though to find out that a few of the #MSS2011 bloggers did turn out to be finalists and winners in their respective categories such as…

Bella for Tourism Blog of the Year – Winner
Jard for Tourism Travel Blog – Winner
Zaid for Eco Tourism Blog – Finalist

As for me, there’s always next year!

I was interested in the two days conference and had planned to attend with Jard but couldn’t make it due to work commitments. (Why did they have it on a weekeday?). The speakers consisted of travel bloggers such as David Hogan Jr (MalaysiaAsia), Ali Watters (Travel Blog) and Shane Dallas (The Travel Camel). These are the people I’ve admired since I landed in the travel blog realm!

There’s always next year. Hmm.

I am also grateful that my friend Jard decided to bring 3 dates to accompany her to the Award Gala Dinner. I was one of them! The dinner was held at the famous Saloma Theatre Restaurant in Jalan Ampang. The location of the restaurant was so strategic that you could see both the KL Tower & the Twin Towers in the skyline. It was just beautiful.

The cocktail area was lit up by the Petronas Twin Towers light.

When we arrived, there were already a group of people queing up for registration. We were to be seated in table W6 together with a few other people (bloggers I presume). Cocktails were served under the stars while waiting for the restaurant doors to be opened. The weather was lukewarm with beads of excitement emanating from guests, including myself. When the clock struck 8pm, everyone made their way to the dining hall and to their seats.

Three of us including Jard sat together with 3 other couples of whom 2 of them were finalists and the other couple was a winner. We chatted briefly and I managed to say hello to Wilson (PlacesandFoods) who was also a winner that night. When everyone was seated, the VIP YB Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen arrived right on time and was ushered to her table. She was accompanied by a group of dancers who took the stage and performed a mix of local traditional dances before the awards began.

Speeches were in order from YB herself who mentioned that this was one of the most exciting project which involved travel bloggers/writers internationally and locally. The whole idea of a conference and networking with other fellow travel bloggers was something I was looking forward to for quite a bit and for Tourism Malaysia to make this happen was pretty awesome.

I like the fact that we were to have dinner before the awards were given out because we get to fill our growling tummies first. Singers Amanda Imani & Atilia crooned their way on stage while we ate our food which consisted of Indian tomato soup, chicken Masala, stewed lamb shoulders with black mushrooms, sweet & sour fish, prawn sambal, braised tofu with broccoli and sago gula Melaka for desserts. It was a mix of Malaysian dishes into one course.

While we were eating, a lady walked up to table looking for ‘fienuts’ and I said “Yes that’s me.” She introduced herself as Hanna from Sedunia Travel whom we have been twittering together on Twitter. I thought she was Malaysian as the name ‘Sedunia Travel’ was quite local. She joined us for a chat and we spoke about her companys’ upcoming website and plans to have a community meet-up which I thought was pretty cool as we don’t have those often as well.

Our Malaysian dishes came in one big course.

Our conversation was cut short when the award ceremony began. Jard was pretty nervous and kept asking one of us to go up on stage to collect the trophy. No no, this was her moment and if she could climb up the Great Wall of China, she could definitely walk to the stage to collect her trophy. 🙂

And the WINNERS are!

Thank you again Jard for bringing me along to this wonderful gala night and to watch you go up that stage to get the trophy that you rightfully deserve! I did mention before that Jard has great storytelling skills in her blog and that she would be a part of something big and bigger. I have salty lips (mulut masin). Congrats again everyone and good night!

  10. Nice one! And congrats for being nominated too. I was in KL the other day and did go to the conference on the first afternoon. (Had a dentist appointment in the morning). Was going to attend on the 2nd day as well but didn't manage to find the time as I had to rush and run a few errands before flying back that same evening.
